Messenger - Windows/MSN

Windows messenger comes with XP and MSN messenger you download.
The MSN version is better. I am trying to get rid of the windows version. I have unselcetd it from Control Panel?Add remove programs?Windows components but it is still there. When I boot up windows messenger normally logs on first. Anyone have any ideas ? If I delete it from program files folder will it break something else?

apparantly its very hard to remove... ive looked into it before and looked like a pain to remove so i never bothered. would like to see if anyone knows an easy way myself

Don't know about deleting. You can shut it down permanently with an adaware plug in though. http://www.lavasoftusa.com/news/windows ... vice.shtml

thats a differnet thing vlam. thats the messanger service which enables people to spam u. i posted a thread somewhere on how to disable that.

windows messange is like the built in msn messanger.

erm...... you're talking bout the preloaded msn messenger then. can you not just upgrade it with a dlded version?

it just settles next to the other msn, so you have two of them.

yep i had it tother day, windows messenger decided to startup and run in the background (with no icon or anything) every time i booted my pc, and they only way i knew it was happening was coz people were messaging me!

yup me to. eamonn once messanged me and i didnt realise i had messanger open

people keep telling me i appear online on msn but cant connect to me.. bet it's windows messanger thats causing it!

What about Removing Messenger or Uninstalling Windows Messenger from Windows XP

The procedure for removing Windows Messenger depends on whether your system has Windows XP Service Pack 1 installed. To determine whether Service Pack 1 is installed follow these directions:

1) Click on Start
2) Right click on My Computer
3) Click on Properties
4) On the General tab, under System if the words "Service Pack 1" are listed you have the service pack.

Removing Messenger from computers WITHOUT Service Pack 1 installed

Make sure your Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Windows Messenger and other programs are closed before doing this.

1) Click on Start, Run
2) Type the following (or cut and paste it) into the Run line

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

3) Click on OK

Removing Messenger from computers WITH Service Pack 1 installed

1) Click on Start, Control Panel
2) Double click on Add or Remove Programs
3) Select Add/Remove Windows Components
4) Uncheck Windows Messenger
5) Click Next
6) Click Finish
7) Restart your computer

just got rid of it
