Coming this fall: a 65nm Xbox 360

Post by fac51 »

A new report in the DigiTimes has the 65nm version of the Xbox 360's "Xenos" GPU coming out sometime in the fall. The new GPU will be made on TSMC's 65nm process, now that the foundry can make the 65nm eDRAM that goes into the product. As for the console's "Xenon" CPU, Chartered Semi will be making the 65nm version that's rumored to be slated for sometime in mid-2007.

So I guess it's theoretically possible that we could see a version of the console with a 65nm CPU and a 90nm GPU before the whole thing goes to 65nm by the end of this year, but I doubt this.

Why does every one seem to be going mental over 65nm?

From the very little I've read, all I can figure out is less power consumption and less heat? Am i missing something major here?

if they can make the entire thing to be no greater than 65nm then it'd be much more newsworthy....

less heat = less overheating a definite bonus 360 wise.

in more general terms it means more transistors can be packed on to a cpu and as it gives out less heat it can be clocked higher.

it's a games console, what's the point in over-clocking it?

erm kev that's why i said in more 'general terms' the first line was regarding the 360!

plus i never said overclocking (although that is true) i said clocked higher so the next gen of cpu's will be clocked higher at release and therefore be faster without giving off more heat and using any more power that is the 'general' benefit of reducing the manufacturing process.
