just thought I would mention guys that I am a big user of eDonkey and Overnet, and you do have some points.
It is not really very good for single mp3's infact it is a pain in the arse.
However it is great for games, full albums, video's, tv series and pr0n
on thursday night I started a download of the 3 unreal tournament 2003 cd's, I have a maximum download rate of 17.5kb/s at home. They were finished sunday morning.
I put every new game release in my cue and it is usually done by the end of the day (per cd)
Things I do
a) get the link for the game or video from share reactor if possible
b) wait up to half an hour for it to reach maximum speed. It can take time to connect to 80 people and reach the top of their cue, but as soon as you have reached the top of the first two or three cues you will begin streaming flat out.
c) dont forget to allow uploading, if you set the upload rate to 0 thinking you are clever, edonkey will set the download rate to 0 as well, mine are set on download of 20k/s and an upload rate of 5k/s this uses my full upload pipe ~4.8k/s and my full download pipe ~17.5k/s. You may need to experiment here
d) choose the client more suited to you. eDonkey/eMule both use servers to relay searches. This has a downside that it stops you searching the whole network, but you usually connect straight away. Overnet has no servers and your search will look at every machine on the network, however it takes longer to connect and you really need to be sharing files that people want to get a large number of connections.
Currently I am sharing my ren and stimpy collection and my south park collection which usually gets me uploading flat out within a minute of turning on.
The other thing is to try to get multiple files at once, if you search for one thing on the standard search and it comes up with 50 matches, select the 5 best matches with the highest availability and wait if one starts streaming pretty quick you can cancel the others. This stops you getting a version of the file with a different hash number to the one everyone else is sharing. (dont bother doing this if you use a sharereactor link they are almost always the best file and work flat out straight away)
Cant think of anything else right now but trust me after a couple of weeks of making do with ed2k you will sudenly be streaming flat out what ever file you want, trust me this network kicks ass. Just search for p800 and grab the lot then wait
