A mate of mine (not me, coz I wouldnt use the shit) recently set up his new laptop, and entered the wrong mailserver address when using the outlook express setup wizard. He can go in to his account settings and change it to the right server, and click apply and ok and it'll work fine for that session, but as soon as he logs off or reboots, it reverts to the original settings. Any ideas?

Try get him to change the storage location of the e-mail & settings. Setup > maintenance or something like that...

hehe I forgot about this till now, he's just brought his laptop into work for me to look at, 6months later!
turns out the only setting it's losing is the POP3 server address, which it's changing to 127.0.0.1 on Windows startup
i've changed the mail/settings storage location and restarted but same problem, and also run a spyware scan and removed any nasties, but still same problem!

sounds like a registry error, could try doing a repair installation on outlook from the xp disc (if that's possible) may need to uninstall and reinstall it or try updating it. also doing a registry scan could find the problem.. maybe

ok i've done a search and it seems that it's Mcafee ArseScan that's causing the problem, apparently hundreds of people have problems using McAfee and Outlook Express together, so i've advised him to get rid of one or t'other (both would be better imo)

spam filtering software usually use the above ip address... so it does make sense as Mcarseee (i think) has an anti-spam component.
