Currently encoding a 740mb AVI into VCD format is taking approx 90mins on my PC, what's the best upgrade i can get that'll make that quicker? I'm guessing either RAM or a graphics card (or both) ?

would imagine it would be the processor, followed by ram. wouldnt have thought the graphics card would make any difference.

ok just checking. so can i upgrade my processor simply without having to upgrade motherboard etc?

erm well that's where it becomes a tad more complicated kev. probably easier taking your pc to a local pc shop and asking them but if you want to do it yourself you need to find out the make and model number of your mobo and then google it to find the manufacturers web site.

search for the mobo on the site and it will tell you what processors it will take (the speed). you may find out that once you have a fatser processor you may then need to flash your bios to get it to work.

also you may need then to get faster ram to work with your new processor so hold of on buying any if you're thinking of a cpu upgrade

up to 400Mhz FSB, is that the speed i need to know ?

well according to that i can't even buy a processor for that speed now

hmm yeah 400mhz fsb isnt too hot for intel these days - it's good for amd though

tbh if you were going to change the cpu to 400mhz fsb you would then need new ram and it would then be worthwhile getting a fatser hard drive. as it appears 400mhz is outdated now for intel (someone pls correct me if im wrong as i dont follow intel much) then you maye as well get a new mobo to boot thus rebuilding your pc (as you may as well get a new case at the same time )

saying that new mobo = ?100 max
new faser cpu (aound 2.8ghz pentium) = ?110
new ram (say 512mb) = ?70
new hard drive (say 120gb 7200rmp) = ? ?65

proabably worth getting a graphics card at this point but the cost would be decided by what you needed it f or.

i'll stick with jus upgrading the RAM on this one for now then
