PC resets for no reason ????

Post by mkush »

right this has happened at least once a day. Usually when i first switch it on,logon then i may surf about for a bit then... BEEP system resets? no message,no warning nothing, just resets. :x

But has also happened when i've had me pc on for a good few hours or so.
i have regular virus updates so i don't tink it's that.
(could the mobo cause this?)

Windows 2000pro
intel p4 2.53GHz
msi 6585 mobo
corsar ddr333 (pc2700) 2 X 512mb
Master cooler
ATI radeon 9500pro 128mb

is there some sort of system diagnostics software for this sort of ting? unless it could be a software problem????

any ideas?

what size psu do you have? random reboots can occur due to an insufficient or faulty psu

230w sounds very underpowered for you system m8. if i remember correctly you have upgraded a lot of components on your pc? did the problems start after this? and what did you add?

also when you trun your pc on it will tell you your bios make. probably be award or phoenix bios or the such. find out which one as that beep could be very significant to your problem.

your pc rebooting could be 1 of 4 things i think.

1 - the pc is overheating - but as it can do it just after switching on this doesnt sound right but i would check your cpu temp

2 - psu - i think you need a higher wattage m8. at least a 350w and a good make like enermax. try to get bigger than 350w if you do get a new one as i wish i had with mine ;)

3 - loose cabling around the psu etc check all cables internally and external power cable

4 - your pc is shutting down due to a problem (bios beep) graphics, memory etc

well i actually had my dads old intel P2 266MHz with case  and used it for a bit before i got my new mobo.
since the mobo i bought:

ati 9500 128mb card
cd burner
Master cooler
2 x 512mb DDr333 pc 2700 Corsar

a fair bit from what it was oridginally ment for :o
only just a few weeks ago i realised that my AGP in bios was set to 64mb so i changed it to 128mb guess this would want more power, which could be why + having the cpu fan on full speed.

My cpu temp is quite good really,at normal like now it's a stable 37 case/34 CPU. When playin games can go up to 59c is that hot?
what is too hot for my cpu?

Oh and the bios is Ambios :)

59c sounds quite hot for a pentium but that is under a lot of stress. if it is rebooting not uder stress then i dont think that is the problem.

the agp apeture wouldnt cause the problem just take up more of your ram when playing games but as you have a gig 128mb should be ok and will result in better textures in your games.

you still haven't told me how many beeps amibios makes but here is a guide to those beeps :)

still think you need to upgrade that psu to a decent make at at least 350w as 230w is way underpowered for your system. make sure you get a decent make though if you get one as the cheap generic ones are rubbish ;)

btw you can post your system specs here:

think it means to try reseating the memory modules. ie take them out and fit them again firmly to make sure they are correctly fitted

does it matter what slots they go into cuz i got three and put them in the slots nearest to the cpu, should i leave the middle 1 free and use outside 1's or does it not matter?

i'm still going to get a new case tho :D

shouldnt matter. some mobo's have certain configurations for extra features like my mobo can will twin bank 2 matched mairs of ram if you fit in slots 1 and 3 and have the correct ram other than that it shouldnt matter what slots you fir the ram into
