Went round to help my grandad out with his pc last nite, think he's gotta virus so wanted to do a full scan, he had Norton 2000 with virus updates from 1999! Couldnt update his virus definitions because if you try to connect to the internet (freeserve dialup) without disabling Norton, the whole pc just freezes and the only way out is to press the reset button
SO i took round a free copy of AVG, installed that fine, but as soon as i connected to the internet the pc froze again, it did it again when i tried with AVG installed but not running, so i uninstalled AVG and it was fine again
WTF????

maybe a virus such as mydoom that is disabling his anti virus. download the definitions on your pc and then install them that way or try an online virus scan or download a fix tool for mydoom assuming it is that
