System not recognising CPU properly

I have just bought a XP2600 processor but when i put it in my system it only recognises it as a XP2000
An XP2600 = 2.08 ghz @ 166
and XP2000 = 1.67 ghz @133
I have changed my bios setting to 166 but no joy i can overclock it to XP2600 speed using s/w but it is not stable any ideas?

If you can overclock it to 2600 via software, theres no reason it shouldnt work via the BIOS. Only thing i can think of is if the BIOS is an older version and doesnt recognise the processor, but if your BIOS has settings for FSB @166Mhz it must be capable of accepting it?!
Only thing i can suggest is a BIOS update.

I have refalshed the bios, but cant see a version number to check if it has worked, will have another look tonight after work.

latest bios version =1.6
and you can't raise your FSB, has to be 133, coz your mobo doesn't support it (mind the numbers 266 in your mobo name= 2*133)

me thinks you've bought the wrong CPU, you've got two different 2600+ cpus
1. 2600+-->@2133mhz (fsb=133) 2. 2600+--->@2083mhz (fsb=166)
so for the first cpu you have a multiplier off 16 (*133=2133) and for the second one you need a multiplier of 12,5 (*166=2083). So have a look in your bios if you are able to change your multiplier from 16 to 12,5 and then raise your FSB to 166, I doubt that it will work, try to bring back this one and buy an 2600+ with fsb=133 (266)
even better, stick with the cpu, and buy a new MoBo, this will increase your overall performance
to be totaly correct there are three different 2600+ cpu, number three is the 512cache one called barthon"

Flashed bios to 1.6 but need to check version as i didn't have time to this morning.
i think it is chip no 2.
Multiplier is 12.5 and fsb is 166. No joy.
And you have confirmed my suspicion that i need a new mobo
The new chip runs at the same speed as my old one so it doesn't matter. I got this 2600 for ?35 instead of ?80 so im not that upset
Will have to put the difference to a new mobo from santa.

Theres a new SATA BIOS as well
