decoy's guide to free stuff part 1 - how to setup MSN alerts on your mobile in the UK.
Step 1:
go to o2.co.uk and create an online email account.
verify with the recieved sms code.
once created, login at o2.co.uk...under 'MY MESSAGE PAD' selct 'E-MAIL TO MOBILE'.
scroll to the bottom of the page, select 'always alert me on my mobile' option....or words to that effect.
press ok and log out.
if you have difficulty displaying the 'E-MAIL TO MOBILE' page your not alone, either the o2 page is messed up or its my firewall, i tried again later and it worked ok with firewall switched off.
once you have success diverting o2 email to mobile device you can proceed...what you just did is create an email address that will send email to your mobile.
step 2:
open MSN Messenger, select 'Tools', 'Edit My Mobile Settings...', under 'Mobile Device' click the 'Mobile Settings' button.
this opens a webpage with 'Device Information' where you provide details of your mobile as follows:
Choose your country/region:
United States
Choose your service provider:
(Other)
tick box 'My device has text messaging', enter o2 email address in space provided.
Time zone:
(GMT) Greenwich Mean Time : Dubli...
press Next> ...wait for phone to receive confirmation code...if you dont receive this, login at o2.co.uk and read email from MSN in the Inbox.
select 'MSN Mobile - Basic' and click 'Continue'
you will go back to the MSN Mobile main screen, and see tabs labelled:

select 'Alerts'
select 'MSN Hotmail' to configure alerts when hotmail email is received, various options available are straight forward, i suggest you dont choose 'Notification for every email you receive' option.
i subscribe to certain NBA full time result alerts becasue i'm rather sad like that and i also get Horoscope readings every Sunday just to add to my dull life existence.
its possible to choose Quiet hours when you dont get any alerts if you look at the bottom left on the main 'Alerts' page.
back to the main Alerts page, select 'My Device' tab and 'Change alert delivery settings', then change the 'Max alerts/month' number to whatever pleases, i choose 300, not sure if there's a limit but i havent reached one so far....make any other changes required and save.
MSN Messenger - to allow people on your contact list to send messages to your mobile device logout of MSN Messenger and when you log back in you should be prompted with a question...if not, select 'Tools', 'Edit My Mobile Settings...' and tick the box at the bottom next to 'Allow people on my contacts.....'
that should be it, you should now be able to receive alerts on your mobile device and MSN Messenger contacts should be able to page you when your not online and it wont cost you a penny.
