GRRR!! Hardware Problems...

Thought I'd take the liberty of creating a hardware problems thread...

This is really challenging me... I don't think I've ever had such difficulty with a piece of HW under XP.

Trying to install a Multitech 128kb ISDN TA for one of my clients so that they can use banking software.

It's a USB device.

What could be simpler you ask?

Nothing happens upon plugging it in, i.e. no little balloon pops up to say "new device found". It doesn't show up in device manager.

There is no obvious sign that XP can see the TA at all.

HOWEVER - if you try to install it manually, it appears at the bottom of the hardware list - a sign that XP can see it's there. If you try to go ahead with the installation from there, it says it's already installed and working!! (if you unplug it, it vanishes from the list)

ALL of the dialups that used another TA (which has now been removed) have changed to dial up with the Multitech, even though it doesn't appear to be installed, or in device manager.

What's more frustrating is that a) all other USB devices on the machine work fine, and b) I can install this very TA on any other XP machine with no problem whatsoever.

Can anyone shine a ray of inspiration???

Have you checked the registry for dlls that arent used anymore? Windows might attempt using an old one for the new hw? Talking of HW problems, it seems i cant get onlin anymore as theres no dial tone according to my ISDN connection :-(

BT are attempting to fix it, (their end apparently, so not a proper hw problem for me) but its bin 8 hours since i reported it :-(

Funnily enough - we only got back to the problem yesterday. We've not quite finished, but we've removed loads of stuff that might have been the problem from the registry.

It's still not liking it, we've even tried the same hardware with a clean install on a different drive to rule out hardware (it worked).

Should finish looking at it on Monday, so I'll let you know

Well, more fun for me recently:

No1. MoBo is buggered, constantly fubars BIOS settings and makes machine run like a pentium 2.

No2. RAM is buggered. Looks as if mobo has put 2.8v through it and now i always get system failed memory test error in POST.

No3. USB ISDN modem keeps buggering up, and the only way to fix it is through system restore

No4. System restore doesnt work as it doesnt recognise the filepath of my cdrw drive (tried in different locations on IDE)

No5. Takes 5 minutes to boot windows to login screen (hard drive shagged)

No6. PSU is giving up the ghost,

No7. Case neons have gone out.

Time for much spending of borrowed money, and maybe a selling of a certain P800 methinks. :cry:

Ive been running at stock for ages now, as i couldnt get properly stable (mobo made sure of that, as did PSU)

According to nForcehq forums its not jus me with the problems, theres loads :-(

had they all been overclocking?
