PC Randomly Mutes Volume

Ok here's one for you: my new poota is randomly muting it's volume! Every now and then (sometimes whilst playing audio, sometimes not) it will just set itself to mute, and i'll have to go into volume and unmute it. Because of this I;ve had to add the volume icon into my systray so i dont have to open control panel every time it happens

tried reinstalling your audio drivers?

hmmm how weird... you don't have any VoIP proggys running or a DJ mixer thing by any chance?

ed - just downloading the latest drivers now that i've managed to locate them on realtek's rather awful website

ok poota been running several hours since new drivers installed and volume not changed, all sorted touch wood

flashback I remember years ago whilst playing Duke Nukem 3D, my music kept on muting... might have been something to do with DirectX but can't really remember tbh...

could be worth trying a dxdiag

ok just run a dxdiag, ran all the tests (not just those relating to sound) and everything checked out fine, and the Windows Help&Support tool was as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike

ok i gotta feeling this is to do with my wireless desktop! i hadnt spotted before but ive noticed that when the volume mutes it pops up a little box that looks very similar to the box that pops up when i press capslock on my wireless keyboard! have checked all the settings for it tho and cant see anything that would do it, and also it quite often happens without me touching the mouse or keyboard

could be inteference, does your keyboard have a mute key?

yep and ive just tetsed it (hadnt spotted it before) and it works, so maybe its that. gonna move the receiver and see what happens

nope, tis only a cheap ?15 labtec wireless desktop, might have to invest in a better one. my mate bought a Logitec DiNovo Desktop t'other day, the git!
