Sony Ericsson P990 and W900i

Sony Ericsson have announced the P990 (the successor to the highly popular and rather splendiferous P910i) and the W900i (which is an S700i replacement with a twist (hurr hurr) as it's UMTS capable and features the Walkman features from the W800i.

Personally, I think the P990 would have been my next phone if only they hadn't gone for the Blackberry look with the integrated QWERTY keypad, as quite frankly QWERTY keypads are hideously shit and not necessary on a phone with a touch screen and hand writing recognition (which was one of my favourite parts of the P series)

The W900i looked promising at first as I thought it was a slider model a la Samsung D600, but I then realised it was a swivel like the S700i and it put me off, as texting from one of those buggers while doing anything is somewhat cumbersome as you have to open the phone first.

Apparently the mechanism will be a lot more competent that the original however, so I am yet to be completely dissuaded.

What do you lot think?

nice one ed!

i was looking at these t'other day, P990i looks nice but as andy said QWERTY looks a bit nasty.
W900i looks a bit tacky to me (i also didn't like the swivel thing on my S700i), and also I note that it's not as high a spec as W800i (only 1.3 megapixel camera for starters)

I've been staring at the P990 for a few days already. truth is, I was aiming for a UMTS WiFi phone next, ideally with a large touch screen though and not so much keyboard..... now that I've seen it I'm not so sure this phoe is the way to go

As for W models... tbh I'm not at all interested in walkman models

Linkage be fixx0red! Kev: The camera is the same one that's in the W800 according to the spec sheet, and it's also got 470 Mb of shared internal memory, a MSD slot and a built in USB connector (a la K600) so it's not too bad!

aaaah just realised the image i'd seen was W550i, the lesser spec and non-3g model, the W900i looks lot better but still not liking the swivel part of it

why cant you get one? i know loads of people got them, and ive been told that the stores are now actively encouraging to buy K750i instead coz they make more money out of them!

All the O2 stores have no stock, O2 have no stock. Carphonewarehouse had some but wanted ?110 upgrade

No one knows when they are getting new stock. On Esato there was athread about low supply high demand.

One of my students has one and he is well chuffed with it. ( Ishould confiscate that I suppose)

Yep,did indeed. I am gonna try and find a service station to flash it for me to remove voda shit...

Its gonna be great!!!!

BTW, I think white is exclusive to voda forever?
