Boot-up times?

Have just had a clearout of startup stuff in msconfig, unchecked 8 items, leaving only seven , but my bootup time (from logon to a useable desktop) is still in the 4minute region! The stuff i've left on startup are: ccApp & ccRegVfy (both Symantec stuff), avgcc32 (AVG Antivirus), winampa (Winamp Agent, not sure if i need it running or not), MsgPlus (Messenger Plus for MSN6), ctfmon (aint gotta clue what this is, but it's in the system32 folder), and PhoneConnectionMonitor (P800 cradle thingy).

Any ideas how i can speed it up? (I can hear the cries of REFORMAT already!)

Not crying anyfing just yet, but am deffo pleased that mine is fatsre than urs, running ancient windows and starting up more items :lol:

thing is, when i login as a different user on my pc, it seems to bottup quite quickly (well, sub-1min anyway)

mine takes forever to boot up properly.
thats why i turn it on before i goto work.. so when i get back , its already booted up

I have this problem to. i use autologon and it takes ages from switch on to loading desktop screen 3/4 mins. I have reinstalled xp and it work ok, then i did sp1 and then the rest of xp updates then its back ????!

i wonder if Microshite have a knowledge base query on it?

I will switch off my autolog tonight and see if i get the smae prob as you, between log to desktop.

could be loads of reasons why its taking a long time. i'd just do a reformat and that will sort it. maybe kev its ur 2 virus checkers kev?

dont think it is that ed, as it was pretty similar before installin AVG. really cba to go thru the hassle of reformating again, it would be easy if it was me own pc with only me on it, but with 5different users it just ends up chaos for weeks!

Try to clean your registry, uninstall everything you don't use often
get rid off the old registry entries off software you don't have anymore
try to get rid off old .dll files --> goto hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\sharedDLLs behind every dll file you see a number, everything with a zero behind is old, just remove it (don't forget to backup registry first)

Mind did it with just xp on it. No software at all. Clean install plus all updates

erm..... i actually use a program to clean my registry... s i would deffo fubar it if i were to mess with it myself!

I love the registry! Anyway, my suggestion is, transfer to linux! All your problems will disappear!
