PS3 price cut on the cards?

Howard Stringer admits in his interview with the Financial Times (not exactly a concise Q & A) that Nintendo has a "very good business model." More than that, he reckons that the Wii and the PS3 are "complementary and supplementary" consoles. OK, we believe that. Now, here's the good part. These exact words came out of the man's mouth: "That [price cuts] is what we are studying at the moment. That's what we are trying to refine," as Joystiq reports.

But the same site also makes a very interesting observation. Given that the PS3's sales have been "lackluster" ? because they chose a high price point and the selection of software wasn't exactly a winner either ? Sony may just consider cutting the PS3's price by even more than just 100 bucks.

I was reading something similar in a mag a few weeks back. It said the cost of producing the BlueRay drives had dropped considerably so it seemed likely Sony would drop the PS3 price to stimulate sales.

Speaking of BluRay - I've been noticing recently that there seems to be considerably more BluRay titles available than HD-DVD - in Virgin Megastore in NYC the BluRay section was approx. 3 times as big as the HD-DVD section, and I noticed in ASDA at lunchtime that the BluRay section was twice as big as the HD-DVD - maybe Sony have at least got that right?

I read somewhere that Blockbuster in the states have chosen Blu-Ray over HD-DVD as well, with the majority of ttheir stores only stocking Blu-Ray.

yep, you aint wrong, here's a BBC story confirming exactly that:

Film rental firm Blockbuster is to rent high-definition DVDs only in the Blu-ray format at 1,450 US stores.

The move is viewed as a blow for the rival Toshiba-backed HD DVD format - which has been battling against the Blu-ray format, supported by Sony.

Blockbuster said that consumers have chosen Blu-ray over HD DVD in the 250 stores where both were available.

The limited choice of titles in the HD DVD format was also a factor in focusing on Blu-ray, Blockbuster said.

Sony is not cutting the price of the PlayStation 3 in Europe, but will offer free games and accessories instead.

There is also no word of plans for an 80GB version of the console in Europe.

Last week Sony said it would drop the US price of the 60GB PS3 by $100 (?50), and introduced a new 80GB version at the original price of $599 (?300).

In Europe gamers will get a "starter pack" at an unchanged price of ?425 for the 60GB machine, with two games and two controllers included.
