Apple's 'magical' iPhone unveiled

US firm Apple has confirmed its move into the telecoms industry, unveiling the long-awaited iPhone.

Users will be able to download music and videos with the phone, demonstrated by Apple boss Steve Jobs at the annual Macworld Expo in San Francisco.

Mr Jobs praised the phone's design and told the audience the "magical device" would "revolutionise the industry".

The phone, which will cost from $499 (?257) to $599, will be launched in the US in June and Europe later this year.

Apple is not yet saying how much the iPhone will cost in the UK, but using the comparison of a Mac mini computer the 4 gigabyte (GB) model would be about ?335.

Although, if apple bring out their own one then due to the branding it could work?

Someone bought up a good point though, listening to music will really wear down the battery, and if you have no phone cause the battery life has gone...

y'mean like all the other phones that people listen to music on vinnie? - the ones where the battery still lasts quite some time because the technology has moved on so much....

Never seen anyone listen to music using their phone, and i'm surrounded by students. We all have ipods, sony walkman, irivers etc. Yeah we have phones with music players on but i never use them.

Although, to be fair apparently the W series for SE is apparently doing well

Me personally wouldn't want to go to use my phone and find it dead, especially in an emergency. My old mp3 player used to die after 2 hours, but this is ancient, not sure what new battery life it like. However, thinking about it when i was reading phone reviews back people were always complaining about the battery life, and that was just for a phone. Will be intriguing seeing the expected battery life for this new phone.

Maybe a gap in the market, but hasn't persuaded me as of yet. And seeing how that moto did with itunes. However, apple have a big brand backing them and they seem to be advertising well so they may crack it. Although, moving into a new market they know nothing about, and moto did and it didn't work?

What i like about itunes was the ability to easily download single tracks. However, hate all this drm rubbish. Can't use itunes on non-ipods, can't use tesco mp3 wma on some players. Arg (and this is buying the songs as well).

The thing is that the new iPhone has nothing new technology-wise. It's got features that other phones have had for a long time. Yeah it looks pretty and rather slick, but it's way too expensive. I'll just stick with my stance that i have with iPods, they aren't right for me, and i'll never own one cos i know of better products more suited to me

16 hours of audio isn't bad, not going to listen for 16 hours a day really as you were saying kev batteries are getting better these days .

can get Sony Memory Stick Pro up to 4GB, but sticks that size are out-dated now, the Sony Memory Stick Micro (M2) currently goes up to 1GB (I have one ) and is smaller than a 5p piece...
