Networking Home PC's - Why bother?

What are the advantages of networking home PC's?

I was thinking of maybe networking my 2 PC's (when my new one arrives) so that i can surf on one and play online games on the other simultaneously.. (can this be done via the dual lan on the Asus a7n8x?

What other things can you do on a home network to make it worthwhile?

Yes it can be done (playing/surfing via internet connection sharing)
- you can play games against/with your friends when they visit you
- you can share printers

by the way ,if you connect two pc's directly you'll need a crosslink cable

crosslink cable? is that the same or different to a normal network cable?

they are almost the same, don't know if it's the correct english name for it,
the difference is ,the cable is crossed inside, normally you would stick your networkcable into a modem or an router. but in the case that you connect two nics than you must use crossed utp

well maybe you have the right cable, just look to the colors in the connectors. If they are fitted the same, than it won't work. If not than it will (???????)

Ed, u need RJ45 Crossover instead of normal RJ45 mate

3. You can share internet connections.
4. You can leave one PC on all the time tucket away in the corner downloading stuff and you can control it my using VNC or another remote administrator program to control it...

5. You can back up all your important files to the other pc aon a regular basis and they are easier to get to than keep getting backup discs out.

6. You can run an ftp server to transfer files between friends
