Right, I know I just opened a topic Recommend me a phone but since then I've had a thought. UMA (unlimited mobile access)

I have Wanadoo/Orange broadband at home, wireless too. If I switch to Orange, I can use this broadband connection to make my calls from home through it (and call for cheaper rates, essentially)

As far as I can tell (after a 3 second glance at phones that is) there are currently only 2 models that support UMA out on the market.

The Samsung P200 which lacks expandable memory and is a slider (oh horror! ) and probably won;t support themes just coz it's a Samsung and the Nokia 6136 which is fugly, lacks bluetooth, probably will support themes.

Sooooooo..... niether of these two have my heart beating faster..... does anybody know of any other UMA-phones that may have been announced? How nice would nit be if SE had made one.....

Never heard of UMA before. Looking at their web site :-

SE is a participant. So it allows you to get phone service over a wifi network and the internet if you live say 1km underground.

The UMA effort was initiated by a number of leading operators and vendors in January 2004. The goal of this work was to develop and publish an open set of technical specifications for extending mobile voice and data GSM/GPRS services over unlicensed spectrum technologies (including both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi), and subsequently encourage the specifications to be adopted by a formal global standards organization.

The Participating Companies published the initial UMA Technology specifications on 2nd September 2004. The companies then contributed the specifications to the 3GPP organization as part of 3GPP work item "Generic Access to A/Gb interfaces". On 8th April 2005, the 3GPP approved specifications for Generic Access to A/Gb interfaces for 3GPP Release 6.

Having achieved their two goals, the UMA participating companies have agreed to discontinue operating as an independent group and continue their efforts to further develop the technology within the 3GPP organization.

I heard of it yesterday, but had no idea what it was.

The only two i know of are that nokia and the Samsung SGH-T709- which i think is the P200 (well looks like it )?
