Anyone recommend a good linux distro (apart from Ubuntu or SUSE), preferably with a bootable disc?

not sure i understand mate? running that will install it for you, you should then see it in the menu as

Applications -> Sound and Video -> VLC Media Player

aaaah in that case you need to add the extra repositories first, they allow you to install non-standard packages, follow the instructions here

Linuxdistro Fedora core 6

Post by Adamizer »

Might be the sudo comand, ive hade some problems with that before, so now i just make su and log in as root.

Try Fedora core 6.
It has come a long way and is easy to install.

Some links to tips on how to install and update. ;)
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-fc6.html

http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Fedora_fc5

http://www.gagme.com/greg/linux/fc6-tips.php

Ive installed it on a pc with nvidia with glx activated.
and a laptop compaq with ati fireglx
There are installstructions on how to mount ntfs.

And the desktop revolves like a cube it's awsome. :D
There are is couple of other effects to marvel at...
The windows makes moves like yello when moved and if you put the mouse's pointer in the upper right corner it shows all open windows on that desktop so you can pick either.

vlc installs easy
you get some extra repos to install from just follow the instuctions.

I think this is the best out there right now and i cant wait till the fc7 in the spring to see if they made some more with the grafiks on the destop.

Btw did you know that cedega is an app for gamers (not free)
it ports games to linux distros.
check it out.
