also - what's to stop be from buying an external USB2 enclosure and putting a standard IDE drive in it? for instance I can get an enclosure for about ?20 and a 250Gb IDE for about ?50, so ?70 total, whereas a 250Gb external USB2 drive starts at ?105

i did that with a dvd writer when the one in my lappy broke ?50 for case and drive.

Its prolly a bit noiser than a proper external but way cheaper.

yeah i can handle the extra noise if i'm only gonna use it for the occasional backup, methinks i'll prolly do that :)

in fact it occurred to me at all that i dont even need an external one, i could just get a second internal one and save even more money :D

My portable 80gig drive really is a lifesaver..

I say lifesaver, it hasn't actually saved my life at all, but it means i don't have to pay over the top prices in net cafes just to use a poota with a CD burner. Fancy charging $2 more an hour just to burn CD's, when you provide your own discs AND do all the work yourself. Robbery in teh first degree.

Anyhoo.. USB harddrives are a great thing to have in your bag at all times!
