CPU Upgrade Advice Needed

Got a new CPU on its way and need a quick rundown on upgrading it. Will i need to change any settings in the Bios ie multiplyer? Anything i should look out for when fitting?

Andy this questions aimed at you primarily as you have used the same mobo as me

from looking at the bios it seems it will automatically detect the multiplyer without me needed to change anything? the new cpu also has an 'fsb' of 333 so looks like i just fit it and go?

Your A7N8X probably wont recognise it off hand, (mine never did).

Just pop the CPU in, apply the TIM, seat the sink and fire her up.

If the CPU hasn't been recognised, set the multi to 13, and your FSB to 166 (or 333, can't remember how it was displayed in BIOS!) and that should give you 2.1 Ghz (or thereabouts)

Mind you, on a Barton core, your'e pretty much guaranteed to be able to get 2.2 Ghz on a 200 Mhz (400) FSB, I haven't come across one that wont as yet, and that would give you a fair amount of bandwidth in comparison.

well it arrived this morning and have now fitted it. only slipped with the screwdriver twice whilst fitting. adjusted the setting in bios and so far so good.

athlon xp3000+ emaonn. got double the lvl 1 and 2 cache of my old chip.

2.17ghz but the clock speed means jack with AMD. It's roughly the equivalent of a 3ghz cpu. got it as a stop gap until going 64bit next year. they're stopping production of athlons now and making budget semprons in its place so really buying one now was my last chance (probably) as stocks will soon run out.

do you really need a 64-bit processor - I mean they are only really useful for professional purposes?

yeah we all will need one eventually. future gaming will definitely need it, anyhow the amd 64 is a shit hot cpu in 32bit mode

going to wait until pci express etc is all rolled out before going down that path. going to be hella expensive too as it requires virtually a new pc

Oh BTW, a couple of friends and I are programming a computer version of shithead - the card game!

Sempron is going to be a Socket 462 (Socket A) for it's bottom end chips and Socket 754 (but not 64 bit) for the higher models, until they eventually phase out the Socket A variant and have 754 as the budget platform.

There's also going to be a Sempron release on Socket 939 IIRC, as this is the socket that the future chips for the mainstream performance market are going to be on (90 nm chips out soon, FX55 is looking goooooooood)

I'm not holding out for PCI Express, as it's gonna be a while before they iron out all the bugs in the chipsets basic functions yet, let alone the rest of the shaboodle. (Hence me buying a Socket 478 setup and clocking the tits off it) as I want to play Half Life 2 in relative comfort without errors.

yeah i know, didnt want a sempron thus getting an athlon before it's totally phased out. new grpahics card next then that should do me for a while.
