BTX is an Intel pushed standard, so theres no definitive statement that ATX is gonna die because of AMDs place in the market. not what ive heard andy. seems like all major case manufacturers are set to adopt btx as it vastly improves cooling and will be necessary for faster, hotter equipment. every magazine/web article ive read on it say its on its way and atx will eventually be redundant. we'll wait and see i guess.
tbh personally i rather it not make atx redundant as it makes most of my pc parts redundant to but saying that will need a new mobo for pci express and adm64 anyway
Ive been delving slightly deeper than normal on researching this one, as its (as you pointed out) a potentially expensive problem. The BTX standard relocates the CPU socket to the bottom of the board, and a cooling \"module\" (basically a ducted fan at the same height as the socket from the front of the case) This wont cause problems for me, as my case has 2 front intakes as is, and I could quite easily create a duct for them. The standard wobt be too problematic for Watercooling uses either, as the only airflow really needed are to the rad and chipset. As for air cooling users, a new air cooling method is in development, which uses micro channels on the chip, with a micro cooling effect produced by electricity jumping between electrons on the core surface. Its said to considerably reduce temperatures, and some graphics card manufacturers are very interested in it. <br/><br/><i>Posted from a mobile</i>
The relocation of components will make it a lot easier to install blocks etc admittedly, and the fact the majority of the new cases seem to have 120mm fan mounts as standard is nice, as mounting 120mm rads will come in handy <br/><br/><i>Posted from a mobile</i>
