What to do if your number plate gets cloned.

Post by arfur »

I have had my number plate cloned, ie someone has put my registration on their car to avoid parking/speeding/congestion charging fines.

If it happens to you then here are something that you should do.

Check the ticket to make sure the cloned car is the same model/colour as yours. If it is different then your in luck as you just write back saying that your car is not the same as the ticket.

If the other person has done their homework and it is the same as yours then you have to prove that you wern't at the time/place. Get people to write a note stating this.

Report it to your local police stating that you belive someone has cloned your number pate. They will give you a reference number (Make sure you get one).

Write to the DVLA - Swansea they will add a note to their computer so that when a search is done to find your address to chase up the ticket (which was never put on yur car) it will show you beleive you rcar plate has been cloned.

Check the tax disk number (at the top of your tax) this is the double check on tickets to prove the car was the cloned one.

Keep a record of everything you write and who you phoned.

When you get another quote all previous tickets and what has happened and all the referencees for police/dvla.

After you have had a few tickets you maybe able to see a pattern for the approximate location of the ticket, you can then contact the police in that area. Don't forget get a reference number.

You should then ring the DVLA (Not any easy thing to do as their phone system has an initail 17 options) but you want to speak to your local DVLA office, look their number up in the phone book. You wan to ask them to reregister your vehicle as you have had your plate cloned.

They will want to see all the tickets and details that you have accumilated(this is why your'e keeping all the correspondance). Hopefully they will then re register your car.

You will have to take it to an inspector sothey can check your car is legit. Take with you you r tax/MOT certificate as they will need to change these.

This is where I am now. 1 year, 4 parking tickets and a congestion charge later.

I'll keep you posted.

No, I could prove that it was not me. 3 of the tickets there was a different tax disk number even though the car was the same make/colour. Just hours of agro :x writing/telephoning.

Final update:

I have now received my docs back from the DVLA so I have just been down to motor spares shop and got my nice new (uncloned) plate printed and bolted to the car. All I have to do now is keep my fingers crossed that I have not received another ticket before the reregistration date, as I will not hear until after the intial payment period is over.

On top of that I am p/x it for a new car.
